If you need dimmable light bulbs, be aware that most green lightbulbs, except halogen lamps, can’t be dimmed.

Be sure to check the label and see if it’s marked. You’ll also want to make sure the bulb is compatible with your dimmer or you could run into problems.

Now, being called a “dim bulb” by your mother in law…that’s something we can’t do much about.

Go Green with Power Strips

Make the investment in Power Strips.

These babies are handy when you have a bunch of gadgets that you often forget to power down.

Things like cells phones and electronic chargers.

With power strips, you can just flip a switch and avoid turning them off individually.

Going low energy means looking for low energy products such as light bulbs, dishwashers, and washing machines to purchase.

Most will have the Energy Star approval seal, so it’s easy to do and can make a big difference in savings.

Using Fewer Disposables

Think of all the paper cups and plastic wrappers and utensils we use on a daily basis.

We can save more trees and keep them out of the landfill, by using fewer disposables.

It may take a little more work to wash and reuse items, but it really does help.

Hot air that gets trapped in your attic will definitely increase the amount of energy you need to keep your house cool.

Attic fans and low profile roof vents will vent the hot air from your attic and reduce the electricity needed, especially during our boiling-hot Oklahoma summers.

Make the necessary investment for attic ventilation and you’ll save a good a bit of moolah in the end.

Try using cloth napkins instead of paper towel & paper napkins.

The cost effectiveness of doing laundry is much higher as opposed to the unlimited number of paper products we use, plus the plastic packaging.

Not Trying to Metal in Your Beezwax But…

Did you know recycling metal saves a big time amount of energy and money?

Take steel products, for example… they have at least 25 percent steel scrap, which lowers the requirement of energy to make steel by 75 percent (as opposed to using virgin metal). No wonder scrap metal is in big demand.

Aluminum cans too… recycling just one saves enough energy to run your TV for 2½ hours.

EF Fridays: Saving Trees by Recycling

Here’s an interesting fact. Did you know that one bale of cardboard is the equivalent of 17 trees!

Mr. Murph goes through a little over 1000 tons of trash a day. That means we are sorting out (and eventually recycling) about 50 tons of cardboard a day.

We are pulling that out of the waste stream which is equivalent to about 800 trees. Think about that… 800 trees a day. It doesn’t take long until you save an entire forest.

The bottom-line is, we save by recycling.

Light bulb tip…CFL’s (not the Canadian Football League) are great if they have to be on for long periods of time.

You may want to go with a high efficiency halogen lamp if your fixture is seldom used or in enclosed areas.
